I was watching an interview of the global rights activist Zainab Salbi. I was struck by her radiance and the fluidity with which she expressed the concerns she had for liberating women from oppressive societies all over the world. I was mesmerized by her observation that:
fighting for your rights can be as simple as wearing red lipstick.
In her earlier years as an activist, she assumed that in order to help and understand women, she had to become androgynous, only to discover through experience that the greatest thing a woman can do to rebel against oppression is to celebrate her right to be female.
To celebrate herself.
So wear heals, put some lipstick on… And smile… Happy Women’s Day!
